The South Carolina General Assembly passed the bill known as “Ryan’s Law” in June 2007. Ryan’s Law served as the catalyst for a national movement toward autism insurance reform. In 2010, Lorri & Dan joined forces with a group of concerned parents of children with autism and youth development professionals to found the Autism Academy of South Carolina.

Following the passage of Ryan’s Law, Lorri Unumb joined Autism Speaks and served for more than a decade as the national Vice President for State Government Affairs. In this role, she traveled extensively and tirelessly with the continued drive to pass autism mandates in other states. In part as a result of her passion, dedication, and expertise, all 50 states have now passed laws or taken other state action to ensure that health insurance covers ABA.

Dan Unumb subsequently joined Autism Speaks to help ensure that the autism insurance laws were being properly implemented and enforced. Dan served as the founding Executive Director of the Autism Speaks Legal Resource Center.

Lorri left Autism Speaks in May 2019 to lead The Council of Autism Service Providers (CASP), an international nonprofit membership organization that cultivates, shares, and advocates for best practices in autism services. The Unumb Center for Neurodevelopment is a proud member of CASP.

Dan Unumb serves as the founder and President of the Autism Legal Resource Center, which develops and protects the legal rights of people with autism and providers who serve them.

The Autism Law Summit is an annual, two-day gathering of parent advocates, autism service providers, lawyers, individuals with autism, lobbyists, and legislators from across the United States who are interested in the politics and policy of autism spectrum disorders. The Autism Law Summit creates space for interactive, high-level, expert-facilitated conversations on improving health insurance, Medicaid, and adult services.

Smart, passionate people come to brainstorm strategies and hatch plans for shaping autism law and policy, and to spend quality time with friends from across the country who've shared similar experiences. Discussion topics include:

• Health insurance coverage for autism treatments, including Applied Behavior Analysis
• Medical necessity determinations
